According to a recent survey by professional learning platform Great Learning, half of the organizations in India are planning to upskill their employees in generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) by the end of the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

The survey, conducted with heads of learning, development, and business units from over 100 organizations with a workforce of 10,000 to 15,000 employees, revealed these findings to the Economic Times (ET).

“Companies are aiming to extend GenAI training beyond just technical teams to encompass a wider array of roles,” stated Ritesh Malhotra, enterprise head at Great Learning.

Organizations are considering upskilling employees in GenAI across various roles such as human resources, operations, marketing, and customer service. The survey covered sectors including IT/ITeS (information technology and information technology-enabled services), consulting, manufacturing, energy, finance, healthcare, education, and retail.

Malhotra highlighted that organizations are targeting three levels of upskilling: foundational GenAI literacy for non-technical teams, strategic decision-making skills for senior leaders, and advanced technical training for core practitioners. The survey indicates that firms in industries like IT/ITeS and global capability centers (GCCs) are prioritizing technical workforce training over non-technical roles.

In the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) sector, companies are investing in GenAI skills for both frontline teams and C-suite executives. Consulting firms are focusing on training their technical teams, while IT companies are enhancing their product engineering teams with advanced GenAI training.

“For example, IT/ITeS sector companies prioritize core data, technical, and AI teams for specialized training that lasts about 2-3 weeks,” Malhotra explained. “Conversely, they acknowledge that leaders only need a few hours of training.”

Great Learning is also set to launch a Generative AI Academy, providing senior leaders with the insights needed to leverage GenAI for strategic decision-making and business growth.
